Today I feel like … Ilulissat
In 2020, Jeppe Hein visited Greenland for the first time. He had been invited to develop a site-specific
commission work for the Social Pedagogical Seminarium in Ilulissat in collaboration with Creator Projects. Their
aim was to involve the entire town in its execution and contributing to an inspiring learning environment for
young, aspiring social pedagogues. As a girst step, Hein invited locals to paint their self-portrait of how they
feel like on the walls of the hall at SPS College.
In doing so, people visualized their mood, just as they feel in the moment of painting. If they are excited,
happy, anxious, surprised or angry, irritated, tired or light-hearted.
The paintings give an insight into very personal thoughts. At the same time, they portray life in its entirety,
reflecting the mood in our society and thus encourage exchange about the respective situation.
Three years later, Hein returned to Greenland to install his artwork Tupilak Catcher at the SPS college. Together
with Creator Projects he also conducted workshops in various institutions across the country, engaging and
activating local residents.
It was part of the initiative, ‘Fællesskab gennem samskabelse’ (Community through co-creation), that is designed
to foster cohesion among residents, including students, vulnerable young people from institutions, and young
people from the general school system in Greenland.
The project spanned three weeks, during which workshops with students at PI/SPS in Ilulissat, Nuuk, and
Maniitsoq were conducted. ´Subsequently, the students themselves conducted workshops in selected institutions
with the city’s residents, thus continuing the project on their own. In each city, residents were invited to a
celebration at the seminar.
